A Unique Place to Stay in Peru

P.S. Includes a short proposal story

Are you going to Peru and love adventures? If so, I highly recommend staying at the Skylodge Adventure Suites. They’re pods that are hanging on the side of a mountain (ever see those videos on Facebook?) that you can climb up to and spend the night. The views of the Sacred Valley from the pods are spectacular and the experience of the whole thing was unforgettable. Natura Vive, the company that runs the whole thing, offers a couple of packages that involve the skylodge. One package is to have lunch in the kitchen pod or you can stay a night in your own personal pod. My husband and I chose to spend a night (early February) since we wanted to take in the whole experience.

Skylodge

Logistics

Nature Vive provides complimentary transportation from your hotel to the Skylodge site and will also take you back to the hotel after your night stay. They will work with you on exactly where you need to go once you have booked your stay. They will also store all your luggage in a secure location for the night and bring it the next day in the van that will take you back to your hotel.

How do you get up there?

So, how do you even reach the pods? Well that’s part of the package, which includes Via Ferrata and ziplining. Via Ferrata is the safest way to climb up the side of the mountain to the pods and zip lining down the mountain is the fun and fast way. Once we got to the site, we had a safety talk and the workers explained how the climbing equipment worked (they will be with you the entire climb). During the climb up you wear a harness and are clipped into the safety wire. To help your ascent up the mountain, there is metal rebar secured into the side of the mountain and you use those all the way up the mountain until you get to the skybridge. The skybridge is a suspended wire bridge that you walk across in order to continue climbing up the mountain (super scary but also really fun). Keep in mind the entire climb you are hooked onto the safety wire incase anything happens. After about two hours, my husband (boyfriend at the time) and I reached our pod.

Tip: Bring only the essentials with you since you’ll be carrying everything yourself up the mountain.

The Proposal (Short Version)

Once we reached our pods, I turned around to my husband to say, “We finally made it!” but to my surprise he was down on one knee. I was in shock and a little out of breath from the climb. He said he couldn’t think of a better person to travel with for the rest of his life and asked me to marry him. I SAID YES! It was the happiest moment of my life and I couldn’t believe it. The Natura Vive workers congratulated us, and the photographer was there to capture the moment.

P.S. If you want to see where we got married, head on over to my post about The Meekermark.

Inside the Pod

Okay….now back to the pods. There are 3 pods that you can stay in and another bigger pod that is the kitchen. All pods are clear, allowing you to take in the incredible view from any perspective. Our pod was the top most pod. To enter, you open a hatch, unhook yourself from all the wires and then climb down in the pod. The pod was so cute! Ours was decorated with rose petals since it was to celebrate our engagement. There was a queen bed, two twin beds and a small area for the half bath (aka no shower). They also provided hot water, two small bottles of wine and tea to make you feel even more comfortable. After relaxing for a little bit and allowing the other groups to get to their pods, we all met up in the kitchen pod where we had a delicious dinner. After, we all went back to our pods and enjoyed the night sky before calling it a day.

Tip: Pods are not insulated, so if you go in the colder months bundle up!

Ziplining Down

The next morning we woke up and had breakfast in the kitchen pod. Then relaxed a little in our pods to take in the views one last time before we start our descent down the mountain via ziplining. We go to the first zip line and the workers explained all the procedures (the most important one on how to stop). Off we went! There are 6 different zip wires that we zipped down until we got the bottom of the mountain. We took off our gear, said our goodbyes and hopped into our van to take us back to Cusco.

Try it!

Staying at the Skylodge was insane and the best place I have ever stayed. The entire experience was worth the hefty price tag. It is one of those bucket list opportunities that I never thought I would have the chance to do. Check out their website if you are planning on visiting Peru on more information. Please, please, please consider doing this. You will not regret it! We’re even thinking of going back on one of our milestone anniversaries.
